Course Description

This course provides an understanding of the design and use of databases, and in a particular, relational databases. Topics include data modeling, SQL, visual database design, and analytics. These topics are divided into the following sections: (1) data modeling & SQL, and (2) database design and analytics.

Course delivery is 100 percent online. Most activities will be conducted asynchronously. Zoom will be used for synchronous sessions (2pm - 3:30pm - exact days TBA). Attendance is NOT mandatory - all Zoom sessions will be recorded and stored for students to view at a later time. The instructor will provide the required information to join and access Zoom sessions via e-mail.

Pre-requisite

MIST 2090 or MIST 2090E or MIST 2190H.

The syllabus is a general plan for the course; deviations announced by the instructor may be necessary.

Objectives

Students completing this course will be able to:

  • Understand the organizational issues involved in data management
  • Develop a valid relational data model for a business of medium level complexity
  • Build and use a relational database
  • Formulate complex queries
  • Use a GUI for elementary descriptive, explanatory, and predictive data analytics

Text Book

Watson, R. (2017). Data Management: Databases and Organizations: eGreen Press. book website.

MySQL

MySQL Workbench for data modeling and SQL execution (tutorial). Macintosh owners can also use Sequel Pro for SQL execution.

MySQL database:

  • Laptop for midterm and final exams
  • Terry College server for SQL exercises
  • Hostname: codrus.terry.uga.edu - Port: 3306
  • Username: cs_yourMyID
  • Password: your810/811number
  • You will get different server credentials for group work

When off campus, you will need to use VPN to connect to Terry's server. You will also need to be enrolled in ArchPass Duo, a two-factor authentication system.

Analytics

Exploratory, a GUI for selected R packages.

Material

Videos and slides created and shared by Dr. Nikhil Srinivasan.

File Security

You are responsible for the security of your own files. To avoid problems, I recommend to regularly backup copies of your work. In addition, when modeling data or writing queries in MySQL Workbench, save your files to prevent data loss in the case of a computer crash.

Academic Honesty

As a University of Georgia student, you have agreed to abide by the University's academic honesty policy, "A Culture of Honesty, " and the Student Honor Code. All academic work must meet the standards described in "A Culture of Honesty." Lack of knowledge of the academic honesty policy is not a reasonable explanation for a violation. Questions related to course assignments and the academic honesty policy should be directed to the instructor.

Team Work

In this course, you will work in groups. As a result, review a short report on team effectiveness and establish a team agreement (sample agreement) for use by the team. It occasionally happens that someone in a team is not prepared to do his/her share. In my courses, I recommend that the team give the freeloader one warning and then fire that person. That person will then do group assignments individually or find a new team to join. The instructor should be notified of changes in team composition immediately. All teams should have about 3-5 members.

Special Accomodations

For special accommodations, especially for quizzes, exams, or assignments, inform the instructor ahead of time (at least 48 hours a priori).
